5 Things You Should Never Do in Affiliate Marketing

By Shawn Casey

Affiliate Marketing can be a tricky business. There are many tricks and tips to remember, yet there is no one-size-fits-all standard for success. One tactic may bring in thousands of dollars for one marketer yet yield little success for another.

There are, however, certain things you should not do in this business. Before you make a big goof that could cost you a lot of money, you’ll need to know what you should avoid.

1.    Don’t let the “big guys” intimidate you.

Is it safe to assume that many newbies stand in awe of the big names in the business? Probably so. However, there’s no reason to believe that you cannot have paralleled success alongside some of the more experienced players in the market.

Keep in mind that affiliate marketing is a wide open field, and you may offer something on your site that will tip the scales in your favor. Go in it to win, not to whine.

2.    Don’t worry too much about “the numbers.”

Don’t be deceived into thinking that you need a huge list to get big results. The key is to get qualified prospects on your list. When you hear other affiliate marketers boast about the size of their lists, keep in mind that bigger is not necessarily better. Quality trumps quantity every time.

3.    Don’t jump on the newest bandwagon, just because someone promises it to be the “next big thing.”

Let’s cut to the chase…  Marketers are in business to make money. Just because someone says they’ve got a blow-out product doesn’t make it so. As a new affiliate, focus on products that have a successful history of making sales. There are a lot of people out there talking the talk but not walking the walk. Focus on results not empty promises.

4.    Don’t spend a fortune buying software programs.

One of the biggest tragedies that newbies face is they fall prey to the very marketing machine that proposes to help them! There are plenty of free programs, e-books, forums, etc., out there to get you started in the right direction. Don’t spend money that you can invest more wisely in other directions. There are many options for getting your marketing machine revved up, and you don’t have to break the bank to get started.

5.    Don’t use unrelated phrases or add too many dashes to your domain name.

If you want to sell products, you’ve got to make it easy for people to find your products. Creating “cutesy” domain names that have nothing to do with what you’re selling may set up your affiliate marketing business for an early demise. Also, avoid domain name disaster by adding too many dashes. It confuses people and they are less likely to remember the address.

Your affiliate marketing success will depend on avoiding mistakes as much as making the right decisions. Discover what NOT to do before you go full steam ahead into your online business.
