A Little Blurb on Listbuilding by Lead Generation

By Shawn Casey

Lead generation and listbuilding are important to any business. Whether you’re using SEO, Web 2.0, or using other means to advertise, ultimately your goal is to generate leads. It might be helpful to have a clear idea of what is involved in lead generation to make your affiliate campaign more effective.

Defining What Generating Leads Means

By definition, generating leads is the creation of prospective customer interest or inquiry into a business’s products or services. While some people may think that getting people to buy your product is the goal, it’s actually not the only goal. The purposes of lead generation are list building, mailing list acquisition, as well as winning customers over to buy your services or products. Building a list is important to an online business, as it is one of the top ten ways to drive traffic to your website.

Of course, the ultimate goal is to get customers to buy your merchandise or services, but sometimes the means to get them there is more roundabout. Mailing lists are also important because many people may not be immediately ready to buy. If you can keep them reminded of your services, they may eventually change their minds and buy your product. More importantly, if they do buy your services, membership to a newsletter can keep them up to date on developments in your products and can cause them to be repeat customers.

Sales Leads versus Marketing Leads

One thing that is often overlooked about lead generation is that it is broken down into two different types of leads. These are the sales leads and marketing leads. While they, at first glance, seem similar, they are in all actuality worlds apart.

Sales leads are generated based on certain demographic criteria, such as their credit scores. They can be sold over and over again to multiple advertisers. More often than not, these leads are limited to real estate and similar business practices.

Marketing leads, on the other hand, are generated for a unique advertiser offer. Another distinguishing feature is that they can only be legally sold to another advertiser once, rather than over and over. More often than not, these are the types of leads you will encounter in your quest for more customers, assuming that there aren’t any demographic criteria that would qualify them to purchase from you.

Though there are a wide variety of techniques used to generate leads, they essentially boil down to two types of rendezvous strategies. These are broadcast techniques and concentration techniques. Broadcast techniques, essentially, are a matter of throwing out an advertisement to be seen by as many potential customers as possible. Billboard advertising and banner ads on Web pages are fine examples. Concentration strategies involve a more concerted effort to match qualified clients to the appropriate providers. Trade shows and marketing surveys are two of many ways this can be done.

Although this is only a basic introduction to lead generation, it serves its purpose as such. More specific details, such as pay-per-click advertising, are for a more specific overview.
