Getting Traffic to Your Website through Social Media

By Shawn Casey

Social media is a handy way for getting traffic to your website.  One of the elements of being a good salesperson is to develop trust with your targeted clients.  One of the best ways to do this is to mingle with them.

Sell Yourself on Your Blog and Traffic Will Come

No product is really so awesome that it will sell itself.  That’s why marketers exist.  You will discover that you will get more blog traffic to your website if you sell yourself well using Web 2.0 properties.

The best Internet marketers don’t sell their products as much as they sell themselves.  If you keep in mind that every blog post, every Tweet, and every status update is, in essence, answers to questions at a job interview, you will keep yourself in the right mindset to sell yourself.  When you do this effectively, people will begin to trust you all the more and are more likely to follow the links that you post.

Selling Yourself is also Good for Listbuilding

It’s becoming more commonplace that an Internet marketer’s mailing list is their collection of friends and contacts on the social media sites.  The people following you on Twitter, Facebook, and your blog are your list of prospective clients.  Selling yourself in your posts can and should draw people to you.

People will often check out friends of their friends, especially if there’s a lot of interaction going on.  If they see only “good stuff” in your posts, they’ll likely decide to keep an eye on what you have to say and make you their “friend.”  Of course, this all goes back to a concept that will separate you from the average social media marketer.

Don’t Just Post Affiliate Links to Your Status

A huge mistake that I see all the time on social media sites is that some marketers set up their profiles, make a number of friends, and then post their affiliate links.  This strategy is good for probably one out of a thousand friends.

It burns out quickly and makes very little money in the meanwhile.  Even worse, it happens quite often that someone will immediately label you as a spammer, and your chances of building a list are toast.  You might as well just kill the profile and start over.

On the flip side, if you intersperse your affiliate links with stories about what’s going on in your life, what you’re thinking about…you know, the kind of stuff normal people do on social media sites, you’ll get better results.  People will see you less as a marketer and more like one of them.

This will lead them to be far more likely to follow your links.  You will also be more likely to keep your list and not be labeled as a spammer.  This keeps you in the game and allows your list to keep growing, and you can’t complain about that.
