How to Use New Technology to Get Traffic to Your Affiliate Marketing Site

When Twitter this first came out, some marketers said it was just a fad. It wasn’t really anything but a kid’s toy, they said. No way in hell was this going to get traffic of any value to anyone’s website. Why waste time with something that can only spout out 140 words at a time? It’s just a fancy, web-based way to text message your friends.

Then, there were those marketers who jumped on Twitter just as soon as they learned about it. They spent some time on it trying to figure things out–and not all of that time was fruitful.

Guess who’s making more money today?

You got it: the group that was willing to take a chance on a new technology–and a learning curve. As you’ve probably already heard about 1,000 times already, genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.

This is as true with online affiliate marketing as it is with any other endeavor. In fact, it may even be more so. Why?

Because new technologies are coming out all the time and you have to spend time learning to use them. I’m not just talking about knowing which buttons to push or where to upload your files. That is maybe 3% of your learning curve, regardless of whether you’re a tech genius or whether you first got on the internet an hour ago.

No, the biggest part of your learning curve for using any Web 2.0 site as a marketing tool lies in figuring out how that tool can drive monetizable web traffic to your affiliate marketing site. This takes practice and experience–no matter what kind of a genius you are!

Of course, experience helps. The more time you spend on traffic tools now, the less time you’ll have to spend later on. People are still people, regardless of technology.

But technology does change, as do the ways that people use it. The strategies that work on Facebook won’t work as well on Twitter. A lot of Twitter strategies can’t work anywhere else.

The kind of strategy that gets traffic to your site from Facebook might look frivolous on a forum or blog directory, and heavy-handed on Twitter.

Sure, you can read traffic strategies on my blog or a few other good ones (and I promise to let you in on a few secrets in the days to come). But you also have to spend time experimenting with the various social media traffic tools you use, every time you enter a new niche.

Twitter, for example, works great with the 30+ crowd–but won’t help you market to teenagers or most twenty-somethings. This confused me at first, until I realized that most of the non-Twitter users were using cell phone applications to network in the ways that us “old folks” do with Twitter!

Sure, people are always going to have needs that they want filled with the latest new product in their niche–fortunately for you and me. And while I can show you several strategies that work (and will, over the course of the next several blog posts), you’re going to have to put in a little elbow grease if you want to succeed!

This is the “unpleasant” truth that most guru-types try to hide from you. They want to sell you a push-button solution to your problems. You won’t get that here. Sure, affiliate marketing is easy once you’ve got it down. But it’s not push-button easy.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is simply out to take your money.
