One mistake many businesses make when they design their websites is that they target for a general audience, hoping to draw in more visitors. The problem is that most online businesses are not paid for every visitor to their website. They only get paid if the visitors actually buy their products. You could have literally millions of visitors and not make a dime if you’re in the general searches, but you could have a fat wallet from a few hundred visitors if you’re in the specific search terms. Niche identification wins in terms of actual money earned from traffic.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In this case, it pays to be as specific as possible when designing a website. If a user types a long search phrase into Google when they&#8217;re shopping for a product like yours, your page should still be there! Most people that shop on the internet aren&#8217;t just there to browse. If they are just browsing, then it doesn&#8217;t matter to you whether they visit your site or not, does it?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Usually, if they&#8217;re ready to spend their money on something, they know exactly what they’re looking for. Chances are the search terms they will be using are very specific. They won&#8217;t be wasting their time browsing through &#8220;camera film&#8221; if they know they just need &#8220;35mm sepia-toned camera film.&#8221; If you put this close to the top of your page, I can guarantee that you will get more shopping than &#8220;just browsing&#8221; traffic. This specificity is where you can win the prize.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If your business has several products,<span id="more-274"></span> as it should in many cases, you should not lump too many items on the same page. This makes the quest for niche identification much more complicated than it needs to be. I&#8217;m not saying that you should have a landing page for each and every single item you sell, but have a few, very closely related items on that landing page.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Back on the camera film analogy, you could have a landing page dedicated to different types of sepia-toned film, or different types of 35mm film. In this case, it would be best for the sake of niche identification to lump your sepia-toned films here. Put your cameras on their own landing pages, and divide those up as specifically as you can. The same holds true if you carry other types of film, camera accessories, batteries, and so on.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Now this analogy should help you understand the concept of niche identification and how it is vital for your online business. Do you want a bunch of window shoppers, people who are &#8220;just browsing,&#8221; or do you want actual buyers, people who are there to spend money? Separate yourself from the crowd, be present in the specific Google searches that rule out the competition, and the money is yours!</p>
