Why Does Everyone Play The Copycat Game?

It’s amazing to me how relatively smart people seem to constantly fail abysmally at marketing.

One of the biggest mistakes I see, and I’ve seen it a lot lately, is the copycat guy. You know how this works… someone develops a new hit TV show / movie / book / something, and a whole bunch of people jump in and copy it.

It’s like having dozens of sequels to a hit movie.

Unfortunately, 90% of the copycats suck at what they’re doing. Seriously.

The marketing sucks. The product sucks. Did you ever notice that almost every movie sequel sucks as well? Not that some don’t make money, but you can’t keep sending out the same message and expecting the market to keep buying at the same rate. It’s not going to happen.

I’ve seen at least 2 versions of this in the arena of Internet marketing lately and it’s pretty funny if you stand back and watch this from a broader perspective.

The first one focuses on list building courses. Every business owner knows you need to build a list for your business. And for an online biz this can be incredibly lucrative. But at least once a month, I get a promotion from some guy who has just released the latest, greatest course on lists.

Nine out of 10 of these guys I’ve never heard of. They’re just copying the last guy who seemed to do pretty well selling a course. But they’re just peddling some rehashed trash that they think might work, but they haven’t actually made work themselves!

The second one is built around being an “anti-guru”. At some point in the development of the Internet, some people got labeled as “gurus”. Not sure what qualifies them. Very few of them sought the title.

Now what happens is all wannabe gurus decide that they don’t want to be gurus any more. They want to be anti-gurus instead. Because they think they’re going to sell more stuff that way. In fact, one guy sends out an email about getting a tattoo that actually says “anti-guru”. But apparently he was not committed enough to the position so he didn’t actually get the tattoo.

Do you see the trend happening here?

It’s like a bunch of politicians that change their minds every time a new poll shows that the voters’ opinions have shifted.
